Ice Maker Repair
Sub-Zero Ice Maker Cleaner: Which Kit, How Much and How Often
Sub-Zero ice maker cleaner is the model-matched descaler plus sanitizer: on a UC-15I, touch CLEAN, empty the bin, add 4 ounces (115 ml) of descaler when the light flashes, then 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of sanitizer, every six months.
Sub-Zero ice maker cleaner is the descaling solution and matching sanitizer sold for your exact machine, and you pour them into the unit’s own clean cycle rather than scrubbing its insides by hand. On a UC-15I undercounter ice maker the job takes about an hour every six months: touch CLEAN, empty the bin, add 4 ounces (115 ml) of descaler when the light flashes, let that pass finish, then repeat with 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of sanitizer. Each pass runs close to 30 minutes.
Scale and biofilm build quietly. Most owners first notice them as cubes that come out smaller, slower or with a flat taste, long before anything actually fails. In Hingham houses these stand-alone units often live in a butler’s pantry or a lower-level bar, out of daily sight, which is exactly why a written schedule beats waiting for a symptom.
Match the bottle to the machine first
The cleaning kit is model-specific, and that is the part most people get wrong. The DEU1550I and the UC-15I share one descaler and one sanitizer. The solutions made for the 315I are a separate product, and the two sets should not be swapped. If your cupboard holds an older bottle labelled cleaner and a newer one labelled descaler, relax: Sub-Zero renamed the liquid without changing what is in it.
Read the model number off the unit’s tag before you order, then buy the kit by that number from Sub-Zero’s parts store or an appliance parts supplier. Hardware-store ice machine cleaners are formulated for other equipment and other dose rates. Because the Sub-Zero cycle is timed and measured around its own solution, a substitute is guesswork, and household vinegar is not in the instructions either.
Running a UC-15I clean, step by step
Pick a time when you will not need fresh ice for an hour, and move the current cubes into a cooler.
- Touch CLEAN on the control panel.
- Empty the ice bin completely.
- When the light starts flashing, add 4 ounces (115 ml) of descaler as the instructions show.
- Let the cycle run its roughly 30 minutes. Once it starts it cannot be canceled, so do not unplug the unit or shut off its water to stop it.
- Touch CLEAN again and repeat the process with 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of sanitizer.
- Wipe the bin and scoop with warm water and mild soap, rinse, and dry them.
While you are down at floor level, clean the condenser. On this model it sits behind the kickplate and wants attention on the same six-month rhythm. A soft brush and a vacuum are enough. Work gently so the thin aluminum fins do not bend, and skip spray-on chemical condenser cleaners, which Sub-Zero considers unnecessary and does not recommend.
The water filter runs on that rhythm too. Order cartridge 7042803 for this machine; older paperwork may list it under its previous number, 7012333. Swap in a fresh cartridge twice a year as a habit, and also any time the machine has sat idle for weeks. The panel helps: its REPLACE FILTER warning glows red once the unit has counted 8000 ice-making cycles. With the new cartridge seated, hold your finger on CLEAN for 6 seconds so the warning clears, and toss the first batch of ice it makes.
Designer Series undercounter units
The Designer Series undercounter ice maker follows a different schedule and different doses. Sub-Zero suggests a clean when the unit is first started, then every three to six months depending on how hard your water is. Its built-in reminder defaults to three months. Each clean takes 1/2 cup of descaler and 1/2 tablespoon of sanitizer, so read the label on the correct kit rather than reusing the UC-15I amounts.
If you see white crust on the cubes or around the water area well before the reminder fires, shorten the interval. Hard water simply deposits minerals faster. Note too that the DEU1550I does not ship with a water filter, which makes a steady cleaning habit more important on that model.
Ice makers inside a built-in refrigerator
The automatic ice maker in the freezer of a built-in refrigerator has no CLEAN button and takes no descaler. Its care is the water filter and the bin. On Classic (CL) and Designer (DET, DEC) models, one cartridge lasts a year at most, or 750 gallons (2,839 L) of water, whichever comes first. Replace it sooner when the indicator asks, when water pressure at the dispenser drops, or when cubes start coming out hollow.
After fitting a new filter, non-dispenser models should discard the first two full bins of ice, and dispenser models should run water for two minutes to flush the cartridge. Between changes, lift the bin out every couple of months, wash it in warm soapy water, dry it fully and slide it back.
Black mold, pink slime and what a cleaner cannot reach
Dark or pink film around a dispenser chute, a door spout or the bin floor is mold or bacteria living on moisture and airborne spores. Wash those parts with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft bottle brush, rinse well, and let them dry before refitting. Scouring pads scratch plastic and give the next colony somewhere to hold on. On an undercounter unit, follow the scrub with a full descale and sanitize.
When the film comes back within weeks, or you can see it inside tubing or a reservoir you cannot get to, the source is inside the water path. The same goes for cubes that keep shrinking after a fresh clean; our guide on why cubes turn cloudy and small covers the water side of that problem.
A yearly routine, and what a technician adds
| Task | How often | Who |
|---|---|---|
| UC-15I descale and sanitize | Every six months | Owner |
| UC-15I condenser behind the kickplate | Every six months | Owner |
| UC-15I water filter 7042803 | Six months or when REPLACE FILTER lights | Owner |
| Designer Series undercounter clean | Three to six months | Owner |
| Built-in refrigerator filter (CL, DET, DEC) | Twelve months or when the indicator shows | Owner |
| Inlet valve, supply line, drain, sealed system | When symptoms appear | Technician |
A professional visit covers the parts no kit touches: the inlet valve and supply line for slow fills or drips, the drain path on undercounter machines, the condenser fan, cabinet temperatures and the door seal. When a valve or water line has to be replaced, that work typically falls in a $300–$710 range, with the firm figure given after diagnosis. The visit itself costs $95, which pays for the trip and the full diagnosis and comes off the repair bill if you decide to go ahead.

Still asked on the phone
How do I clean my Sub-Zero ice maker?
Run the machine's own clean cycle with the descaler and sanitizer made for your model. On a UC-15I you touch CLEAN, empty the bin, add 4 ounces (115 ml) of descaler when the light flashes, wait out the roughly 30-minute pass, then repeat with 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of sanitizer. Wash the removable bin and scoop by hand with warm water and mild soap.
What should I run through my ice maker to clean it?
Only the descaler and sanitizer sold for that specific Sub-Zero model. The DEU1550I and UC-15I share one pair of solutions, while the 315I uses a different pair, so the bottles are not interchangeable. Vinegar and generic ice machine products are not part of the instructions, and the cycle is measured around the correct solution.
How do I remove black mold from my refrigerator ice dispenser?
Scrub the chute, bin and spout with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft brush, then rinse and dry everything before refitting it. Avoid scouring pads. If the dark film returns within a few weeks, or you can see it inside tubing you cannot reach, the source is in the water path and a technician should open it up.
Where can I buy Sub-Zero ice maker cleaner?
Sub-Zero's own parts store and appliance parts suppliers carry the kits, and the safe way to order is by the model number on your unit. A bottle labelled cleaner and one labelled descaler are the same product under an old and a new name, so either works for the model it was made for.
Can I stop a UC-15I clean cycle halfway through?
No, once a UC-15I clean cycle starts it cannot be canceled and has to run to the end. Start it when you have about an hour free, enough ice set aside in a cooler, and no plans to unplug the unit or shut off its water.
